COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course teaches the basic methodology for the design and cost evaluatin of bioprocess involving biotransformations, separation and thermal unit operations. It analyses strategies to reduce energy consumption and production cost. The guiding thread of the course is a R&D project on the design and cost evaluation of an enzyme production process.

  • Evaluate the bioprocess materials consumption and effluents production, energy consumption and equipment sizes 

  • Determine the costs of materials, utilities, labor, equipment investment and utilization, and the overall bioprocess production cost 

  • Construct a spreadsheet simulator for bioprocess design and cost evaluation

  • Evaluate the uncertainty of the cost evaluation

  • Assess process modifications to reduce energy consumption and production cost
